Despite 'ajam's recent formation the main members of the group have been playing music together since 2004.Their music draws influence from various everyday music genres but has a strong base in the native music of Iran and in many ways their music can be described as 'Iranian Roots Music'.

Live performances are very fluid and can vary from unplugged acoustic sets to lively club sets with a more electronic soundscape. Recordings always feature a strong presence of Iranian melodic instruments, thick layers of live percussion and both synthesised and live Bass with Modern production sensibilities.

'Ajam is a cultural experience. In addition to the raw energy of tribal and ritual music that inspires their sound, elements of dance and movement are incorporated into live shows.

'Ajam philosophy:

'Ajam is a historic name for Farsi speaking people. The root of this word can be traced back to a term used to describe 'non-Arab' Muslims and literally meant 'illiterate'

'Ajam try to bring the epic, energetic, and often aggressive spirit of the regional musics of Iran to this generation. In many ways they reintroduce Iranians to native cultures that are often neglected in representations of Iran as well as creating a platform for an international audience to hear the less standardised and 'untamed' music of Iran.

Several of the cultures that 'Ajam pay hommage to overlap with those of neighbouring countries. This represents the common shared history and culture between the peoples of the area.

:فلسفه عجم

عجم یک اسم تاریخی برای مردم فارسی زبان هست. در اصل این واژه را اعراب برای اقوام مسلمان که از نژادهای غیرعرب بودند استفاده ميكردند به معنی كند زبان يا بى سواد. ما اسم این گروه رو "عجم" گذاشتیم به نشونه قدردانی از کل فرهنگ و تاریخ ایران (نه فقط از دوران پیروزی) و این که نشون بدیم ما حتی به پست ترین لقب برای ایرانیان مفتخریم

موسیقی گروه عجم تلاشیست براى آشنا کردن شنونده امروزی با روحیه حماسی و هیجان انگیز موسیقی بومی ایران در قالبهای نوین. امید بر این هست که با استفاده از فرمهای الهام گرفته از سبکهای شناخته روز گوش غیرایرانی را هم عادت بدیم به اصوات ایرانی

پروژه عجم عرض ادبيست به فرهنگهای زنده نواحی ایران. برخی از این فرهنگها با کشورهای همسایه مشترک هستن و  این نمونه ای از تاثیرگذاری و تاثیر پذیری فرهنگ ایرانی هست و نشونه گستردگی  مرزهای فرهنگی ایران نسبت به مرزهای بین المللی امروز است
